How long do you put your career on hold?

Do you remember when you first joined the company and what was said and agreed during the interview?

For some it’s been over 3yrs and some longer since remembering the promises of growth, career development and ongoing training. How long do you wait for those promises to happen? What if you just call it quits and move on? Hangon, I am happy with the people I work with and I get paid okay so I guess it’s not that bad if you hold out for a little longer. The old saying goes: “Good things come to those who wait…”. I know people who waited and got what they wanted, but there are also those who called it quits.

Have you put your career on hold? Did you wait and got what you wanted? Did you just called it quits and moved on?How long is too long?

If you can’t beat them, them leave them.

Have you submitted a proposal before but only to get rejected,lost or simply just too expensive.

To this stage unfortunately some organization still see IT as a business expense as oppose to a service to the business, what makes it worse are people in management that feels all money spent comes from their own pocket. Being proactive was the key to providing good service in addition to good communication, and when I mean by communication this is is just simply keeping everyone informed. Still no support from management you are now being reactive and simply don’t care anymore, common words for the day among your peers are “It’s an expensive solution” or simply “It’s not in the budget”.

I have seen people leave and some remain in the job hoping things will change. Have you been in a similar situation or know of any one that has been or could be in a similar situation?

You know what they say “It’s hard to teach old dogs new tricks”.

How did you get into the IT Industry?

I now have been working for over 10 years in the IT Industry and over time I always get asked this question. The funny thing is I would consider myself as a late bloomer in IT as I originally took Business Management in College and just the odd computer modules during class. I had my first break or so called foot in the door when I was working for a manufacturing firm as a Customer Service Rep, the Financial Controller at the time was also the IT Officer and he asked me if I was interested in managing the backups and coordinating support tickets with our supplier. What do you say to that, but a big YES.

Since then I have worked with several service providers and worked with different vendor products from IBM’s Lotus Domino, AS/400, MS Products and other Enterprise Software and Applications.

One thing that I have learned in this industry, it’s not knowing all but knowing where to get the information.

IT Career Dos and Don’ts

Over the years I have met and worked with different people. Most of them knew from the beginning that they would like to work in the IT Industry, focused on what they wanted and succeeded. I had a workmate I know started as a Typewriter Technician and is now a successful Systems Engineer for a well known Service Provider. One other person started in a Call Center taking inbound calls and generating tickets for engineeers, now he is the Network Administrator for a National Bookstore in New Zealand.

Questions are raised now and then from folks who are new to IT on how to walk the tightrope of learning on the job, and doing it all without spending too much money

Based on my experience, certification in Cisco and Microsoft are worth having as a minimum, obviously some practical hand-on will go a long way as well. When you are working in a team environment, always ask the question and seek advice from your peers as they are more likely to have encountered issues you are having now, if not they will be able to refer you to places to get answers. If you are a one man band, there are good resources on the internet that you can subscribe to such sites are TechRepublic and SearchWinComputing. There are also good books and whitepapers available

Remember, it’s not knowing all the information but where to get the information that matters.
